Our village, which is situated at the edge of the Cévennes, witnessed
the revocation of the Edict of Nantes and the Protestant revolt following
the affair "du prieur de Vallerargues." This incident led to the
closing and then the disappearance of the church.
The only traces of that distant era are the wash-house, which is fed from a spring,
and a clock tower, which still has its original mechanism. Even older are the
pretty windows from which we can look out onto the garrigue. The village is a
good starting point for walks through the vast fields of golden sunflowers, past
the lake which is encircled by a forest of white oaks, where mallards and gray
herons come to refresh themselves. If you follow the hiking trails, you will
reach Mont Bouquet and Lussan.
On the other side, in the middle of the garrigue, we can see does, emus, and
farm animals roaming freely in la manade de Collorgues. If you continue towards
Uzès, those visitors who wish to take home a pet can stop at the animal
shelter SPA Gard Cévennes.
Vallérargues is a great place to live in and to visit.
